But what most folks leave out of the “raising a baby squirrel” tale is the story about the day that the wild squirrel (or bunny, or bird) went a little “crazy” and had to be released back into the wild.

The recent popularity of designer” dogs, cats, micro-pigs and other pets may seem to suggest that pet keeping is no more than a fad. Indeed, it is often assumed that pets are a Western affectation, a weird relic of the working animals kept by communities of the past. Dogs may be denied entry if they look like they are sick with a communicable disease or if proof of a valid rabies vaccination is not provided. If a dog appears to be sick at the port of entry, further examination by a licensed veterinarian at the dog owner’s expense might be required. Other theories suggest that having a pet such as a dog may be an “honest signal” of a person’s wealth. That is, caring for an animal shows the owner has adequate extra resources to provide for it in addition to him or herself. If you have large animals such as horses, cattle, sheep, goats or pigs on your property, be sure to prepare before a disaster. In recent times, much attention has been devoted to the notion that keeping a dog (or possibly a cat) can benefit the owner’s health in multiple ways – reducing the risk of heart disease, combating loneliness, and alleviating depression and the symptoms of depression and dementia.

Pet owners should also consider the possibility of emergency situations while overseas that could require rapid departure or shipping of a pet. While some research has shown that pets do increase some aspects of health, more recently the opposite has also been found.

Additionally, there has been a great deal of debate about how to select a model to derive the weights. A sophisticated propensity score weighting method using generalized boosted regression, a data-adaptive, nonparametric logistic regression technique was developed at the RAND Corporation which can accommodate complex and nonlinear relationships between covariates and treatment selection 46 The weights created using boosted regression provide the estimated conditional odds of receiving treatment where Xi is the vector of control variables and p(Xi) is the estimated conditional probability of receiving treatment for an individual with control variables equal to Xi. We believe this approach is most appropriate for causal analyses that model outcomes of pet ownership because the type, strength, and form of the relationship between the predictors and ownership (e.g., treatment”) have not been empirically established.

The recent review of the research literature on the impact of pet ownership on health concluded that there is not enough evidence to make any conclusions 3 The piece reviews the methodological challenges preventing the extant literature from building a strong research base, including problems with small samples, convenience samples, lack of methodological rigor, and self-report measures, and the file drawer” effect. All the research to date suffers from several limitations that prevent any strong conclusions about the … Read more

A pet or companion animal is an animal kept primarily for a person’s company, protection, or entertainment rather than as a working animal, livestock, or laboratory animal. This is more a fun thought experiment than anything else, and we definitely don’t recommend you go looking for some of these critters to adopt. (In many places, doing so would be illegal.) And while these five animals got tentative interest from the scientific team, other groups the researchers had evaluate their characteristics suggested none of the 90 animals on the initial list could responsibly be turned into pets.

The effect of human-animal interaction on health is not fully understood because it is difficult to study. Most evidence on the benefits of having a pet comes from surveys of current health, but that means it is impossible to know if a person is in good health because she has a pet or if he is more likely to get a pet because he is in good health. Someone whose health is poor may decide he does not have the time or energy to care for a pet. The German study described above suggests that having a pet for a longer period of time is more beneficial to your health; but it is also possible that people with pets have less time to spare to go to the doctor or are less concerned about their own health, especially minor ailments.

I have to admit that the capuchin-marmoset relationship has caused me moments of doubt. I am not, however, ready to give up the idea for a couple of reasons. First, while the capuchins were not confined, the situation was not … Read more
