Did you know that a pet can considerably reduce the amount of stress in your life? The pet-keeping habit often runs in families: this was once ascribed to children coming to imitate their parents’ lifestyles when they leave home, but recent research has suggested that it also has a genetic basis. Some people, whatever their upbringing, seem predisposed to seek out the company of animals, others less so. Nashvillians love their pets, whether they are dogs, cats or backyard hens. The Metro Health Department’s Animal Control Division has information on programs for promoting responsible pet ownership, pet adoptions and enforcing animal control ordinances.
1. It’s illegal. It is against the law to try to raise any type of wild animal in captivity. That goes for baby crocodiles and monkeys from the illegal pet trade as well as baby robins and bunnies from your back yard. The human-animal bond is a mutually beneficial and dynamic relationship between people and animals that positively influences the health and well-being of both.
A picture of you and your pet together. If you become separated, a picture of you and your pet together will help you document ownership and allow others to assist you. Add species, breed, age, sex, color and distinguishing characteristics. However, the evidence is contradictory. While some research has shown that pets do increase some aspects of health, more recently the opposite has also been found.
I have known about the lion example for a long time. In fact, I discussed in the original version of the pet chapter in my book. (The chapter got too long so I had to drop it.) In every case of wild chimpanzee “pet-keeping” things turned out bad for the pet, which was eventually killed. This was also the case with the lion example you sent. The sad part is that the lioness adopted half a dozen baby antelopes, all of which were eaten by other lions.
Birds are fascinating and beautiful creatures, but they are not easy-care pets. They are intelligent, social animals and need plenty of attention. Before you add a bird to your family, make sure you’re willing to spend time with your feathered friend each day. Also, in the wild, birds are flock animals, so if you’re thinking about getting a bird, you might think about getting two. Life alone in a cage is not much of a life for a bird.
