There are two forms of criticism of the concept of animal welfare, coming from diametrically opposite positions. One view, held by some thinkers in history, holds that humans have no duties of any kind to animals. The other view is based on the animal rights position that animals should not be regarded as property and any use of animals by humans is unacceptable. Accordingly, some animal rights proponents argue that the perception of better animal welfare facilitates continued and increased exploitation of animals. 5 6 Some authorities therefore treat animal welfare and animal rights as two opposing positions. 7 page needed 8 9 Others see animal welfare gains as incremental steps towards animal rights.
I’ve always wondered if it’s an evolutionary hump that intelligence reaches and then overcomes; feeling the desire to keep pets, that is. I believe that in the future, we will no longer feel the desire to “keep” pets, aside from the few who truly wish to stay in our company, because the more we learn about animals, in general, the more we learn that they are better left in the wild.
OverviewOver two million pets and other live animals are transported by air every year in the United States. Federal and state governments impose restrictions on transporting live animals. Tragically, thousands of healthy cats and dogs are euthanased (put to sleep) each year in shelters and pounds across Victoria. This is because not enough homes can be found for them – we have an ‘over-supply’ of pets.
I don’t know if these feral children fit the definition of a pet, since the concept of a pet seems uniquely human simply because of motive. But we aren’t the only animal which raises another of a different species. For some reason, mama wolf takes it upon herself to suckle and protect and teach the ways of the wolf to a 2-legged human child. Probably instinctual on the part of the wolf, but I wonder if it’s much different with us and our 4-legged foster canine children we feed, and raise, and teach the ways of humanity.
