I’ve always wondered if it’s an evolutionary hump that intelligence reaches and then overcomes; feeling the desire to keep pets, that is. I believe that in the future, we will no longer feel the desire to “keep” pets, aside from the few who truly wish to stay in our company, because the more we learn about animals, in general, the more we learn that they are better left in the wild.

Habituation is a process by which animals gradually get used to situations they would normally avoid. Many animals are easily habituated if they are not handled and managed properly during rehabilitation. Coupled with the unpredictable nature of wild animals, habituation is dangerous for humans and wild animals. Habituated animals cannot be returned to the wild, because they are likely to become nuisances or an outright danger to humans, which in turn jeopardizes the animals.

His idea, which is shared by a number of legal advocates, is that humans are unique. Only we can have rights because rights imply responsibility and an understanding of how society works and how the law works. All of human civilization is built on us not only understanding our own rights but also understanding the rights of others. Giving animals rights completely shatters this: Not only are they not human, but we have no idea that they can even comprehend this status and these rights that we’ve given them.

If you live by yourself, or your partner works different shift patterns to you, it can get awfully lonely at home – unless you have a pet, of course! Cats and dogs make great … Read more

Explore the wonderful world of animals through the many interesting facts about them and find everything you need to know about pet adoption and care, in these articles on Animals and Pets. I don’t know if these feral children fit the definition of a pet, since the concept of a pet seems uniquely human simply because of motive. But we aren’t the only animal which raises another of a different species. For some reason, mama wolf takes it upon herself to suckle and protect and teach the ways of the wolf to a 2-legged human child. Probably instinctual on the part of the wolf, but I wonder if it’s much different with us and our 4-legged foster canine children we feed, and raise, and teach the ways of humanity.

Behavior evaluations and training: Animals at the shelter are evaluated by our trained staff before being placed up for adoption. Pets with behavior issues may be placed into foster homes or paired with a professional behaviorist to get them ready for adoption. Adoption staff will then work to pair the animal with the best possible adopter to reduce returns or problems in the home.

Microchip scanner: While you can take a pet to a local veterinarian to have it scanned for a microchip, not all veterinarians have a universal microchip scanner and therefore cannot scan for all different microchip types. The Seattle Animal Shelter thoroughly scans each animal upon intake with a universal scanner, which reads most, if not all, microchips in use.

Related to the guinea pig, this native South American is the largest rodent in the world. Fully grown, the capybara is on average 4 feet (1.2 meters) long and usually weighs more than 100 pounds (45 kilograms). It’s rare to find these obscure animals as pets, but there’s … Read more

Pet Animal Sounds For Kids To Learn

Many Kingstonians enjoy the love and companionship of pets. I was thinking about feral children, humans raised by wild animals. Wolves come to mind, because there are documented instances of children adopted and raised by wolves. Other animals have fostered human children as well. The lucky human is adopted and raised like one of their own, and the human in return adapts to their provider’s society, often at the cost of his or her own humanity.

Read pet guides explaining the various personalities, tendencies, and backgrounds of specific breeds in detail. For example, some dog breeds (such as certain terriers or Chihuahuas) are known for their feistiness and are considered less tolerant of kids — especially if they aren’t raised with kids from puppyhood. Golden Retrievers and Labrador Retrievers, on the other hand, have excellent reputations as family-friendly dogs. Also look around for guides (at your local bookstore, on the Internet, or at animal shelters) about taking care of different kinds of pets. If you’re interested in rabbits, the House Rabbit Society is an excellent resource — visit its website for information on rabbits and rabbit care.

You should call your local wildlife rehabilitation center and have one of their employees come out to take a look. Oh, come on, you say. Bunnies (or squirrels, or fawns) make great pets, right? Everybody knows someone who told stories of having one of these wild animals as a pet as a kid. But what most folks leave out of the “raising a baby squirrel” tale is the story about the day that the wild squirrel (or bunny, or bird) went a little “crazy” and had to be released back into the wild.

The recent popularity of designer” dogs, cats, micro-pigs and other pets may seem to suggest that pet keeping is no more than a fad. Indeed, it is often assumed that pets are a Western affectation, a weird relic of the working animals kept by communities of the past. Dogs may be denied entry if they look like they are sick with a communicable disease or if proof of a valid rabies vaccination is not provided. If a dog appears to be sick at the port of entry, further examination by a licensed veterinarian at the dog owner’s expense might be required. Did you know that a pet can considerably reduce the amount of stress in your life? The pet-keeping habit often runs in families: this was once ascribed to children coming to imitate their parents’ lifestyles when they leave home, but recent research has suggested that it also has a genetic basis. Some people, whatever their upbringing, seem predisposed to seek out the company of animals, others less so. Nashvillians love their pets, whether they are dogs, cats or backyard hens. The Metro Health Department’s Animal Control Division has information on programs for promoting responsible pet ownership, pet adoptions and enforcing animal control ordinances.

1. It’s illegal. It is against the law to try to raise any type of wild animal in captivity. That goes for baby crocodiles and monkeys from the illegal pet trade as well as baby robins and bunnies from your back yard. The human-animal bond is a mutually beneficial and dynamic relationship between people and animals that positively influences the health and well-being of both.

A picture of you and your pet together. If you become separated, a picture of you and your pet together will help you document ownership and allow others to assist you. Add species, breed, age, sex, color and distinguishing characteristics. However, the evidence is contradictory. I have known about the lion example for a long time. In fact, I discussed in the original version of the pet chapter in my book. (The chapter got too long so I had to drop it.) In every case of wild chimpanzee “pet-keeping” things turned out bad for the pet, which was eventually killed. This was also the case with the lion example you sent. … Read more
