Before pets can be imported to New Zealand, they need to meet health requirements. It’s important to consider the others in your household as well. Their personalities and schedules will also be factors in your decision. If you have children, you’ll need a pet that is easygoing and playful. The best pets are those that will fit in well with your family, so you might need to do some compromising. Added bonus: Reptiles are nonallergenic. However, keep in mind that the American Academy of Pediatrics warns against reptiles as pets for young children because they can easily transmit salmonella. Make sure to research specific care requirements for any new reptile pet.
Chinchillas are nocturnal animals, and need a very large cage plus a dust bath (this is essential for their mental and physical well-being). They are enthusiastic dust bathers and do make quite a lot of mess! Chinchillas need to live with a companion – either a female with a neutered male, or litter-mates of the same sex (they will usually live harmoniously as long as they have been together since birth).
In terms of ultimate causation, pet-human relationships do resemble a type of commensulism – an interspecies relationship in which one creature benefits at no presumed cost or benefit to the member of the other species. As David MacDonald and colleagues recently pointed out in an article in Nature, this does seem to characterize some human-animal relationships, for example, our relationships with pigeons and English sparrows, and perhaps even house mice. However, in terms of proximate causation, there is a big difference (I think) between the reasons that humans form such tight bonds with the animals we decide to share our lives with and the mouse that lives behind the file cabinet in my office. And I remain intrigued why animals like chimps, and rhesus monkeys do form pet-like relationships with other species but do not seem to in nature. I suspect the answer lies in a combination of cultural transmission and a highly developed theory of mind.
Most boarding kennels, veterinarians and animal shelters will need your pet’s medical records to make sure all vaccinations are current. The official veterinarian of the country of dispatch must deliver a specific health certificate (model laid down by the European Union) instead of the usual health certificate. Pets may not be sold to anyone younger than 16. Animals for sale may not be displayed in a shop window. The person selling the animal must give the buyer written information about the animal.
The City’s pet and animal regulations are intended to secure the safety and well-being of adored pets – and to safeguard members of the community, including domestic pets, from unexpected run-ins with wildlife and uncontrolled animals. Animals should be cared for in ways that minimize fear, pain, stress, and suffering. In the end, exotic pets are not safe to keep in people’s homes, advocates say.
