Explore the wonderful world of animals through the many interesting facts about them and find everything you need to know about pet adoption and care, in these articles on Animals and Pets. I’ve always wondered if it’s an evolutionary hump that intelligence reaches and then overcomes; feeling the desire to keep pets, that is. I believe that in the future, we will no longer feel the desire to “keep” pets, aside from the few who truly wish to stay in our company, because the more we learn about animals, in general, the more we learn that they are better left in the wild.

Habituation is a process by which animals gradually get used to situations they would normally avoid. Many animals are easily habituated if they are not handled and managed properly during rehabilitation. Coupled with the unpredictable nature of wild animals, habituation is dangerous for humans and wild animals. Habituated animals cannot be returned to the wild, because they are likely to become nuisances or an outright danger to humans, which in turn jeopardizes the animals.

His idea, which is shared by a number of legal advocates, is that humans are unique. Only we can have rights because rights imply responsibility and an understanding of how society works and how the law works. All of human civilization is built on us not only understanding our own rights but also understanding the rights of others. Giving animals rights completely shatters this: Not only are they not human, but we have no idea that they can even comprehend this status and these rights that we’ve given them.

If you live by yourself, or your partner works different shift patterns to you, it can get awfully lonely at home – unless you have a pet, of course! Cats and dogs make great … Read more

Before pets can be imported to New Zealand, they need to meet health requirements. You are right. There are scads of examples of long-term attachments between animals of different species. The problem is that virtually all these cases have occurred among captive or semi-captive animals in zoos, wildlife sanctuaries, or research labs. I recently scoured academic journals and consulted a host of animal behaviorists for examples of pet-keeping in other species in the wild. I found none. True, there are a few articles in primatology journals which describe instances in which wild chimpanzees “played” with small animals like hyraxes. But in each case, the relationship soon went south when the chimps killed their new pals and proceeded to toss their corpses around like rag dolls.

Before Hurricane Florence hit, local animal shelters began asking residents for assistance in providing shelter for the pets in their care. A viral photos shows the long line of people willing to help at animal rescue center, Saving Grace, where 124 dogs were successfully rescued. There are lots of definitions in the scholarly literature. I like the anthrozoologist James Serpell’s definition. He says a pet is an animal that we live with that has no obvious function.

3. Wild animals carry diseases. Did you know that many wild animals — like raccoons or skunks — can be carriers for rabies without showing any symptoms? And according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, tens of thousands of people get salmonella infections each year from wild reptiles or amphibians. Bringing a wild animal into your home exposes your whole family — you, your kids and your pets — to a slew of potentially fatal diseases.

As you explore the questions below you’ll discover which animals are suitable for each situation, this will narrow down your … Read more

Chicago Animal Care and Control protects public safety and ensures the humane care of animals through sheltering, pet placement, education and animal law enforcement. A picture of you and your pet together. If you become separated, a picture of you and your pet together will help you document ownership and allow others to assist you. Add species, breed, age, sex, color and distinguishing characteristics. However, the evidence is contradictory. While some research has shown that pets do increase some aspects of health, more recently the opposite has also been found.

Additionally, there has been a great deal of debate about how to select a model to derive the weights. A sophisticated propensity score weighting method using generalized boosted regression, a data-adaptive, nonparametric logistic regression technique was developed at the RAND Corporation which can accommodate complex and nonlinear relationships between covariates and treatment selection 46 The weights created using boosted regression provide the estimated conditional odds of receiving treatment where Xi is the vector of control variables and p(Xi) is the estimated conditional probability of receiving treatment for an individual with control variables equal to Xi. We believe this approach is most appropriate for causal analyses that model outcomes of pet ownership because the type, strength, and form of the relationship between the predictors and ownership (e.g., treatment”) have not been empirically established.

The recent review of the research literature on the impact of pet ownership on health concluded that there is not enough evidence to make any conclusions 3 The piece reviews the methodological challenges preventing the extant literature from building a strong research base, including problems with small samples, convenience samples, lack of methodological rigor, and self-report measures, and the file drawer” effect. All the research to date suffers from several limitations that prevent any strong conclusions about the … Read more

Before pets can be imported to New Zealand, they need to meet health requirements. Member States may authorise registered military or search-and-rescue dogs to move through a point of entry other than a travellers’ point of entry. We donate a portion of every purchase to an individual pet in need, a shelter or an animal welfare organization. Cats can live up to 15 years or more, so you should be prepared to make a long-term commitment if you adopt a kitten.

People in later life experiencing typical life stresses can be comforted by a companion pet. It is thought that a dog can be a stress buffer that softens the effects of adverse events on a person. With an animal in the home, people with Alzheimer’s are thought to have fewer anxious outbursts. When travelling to Belgium from a country that is not mentioned in Annex II, you must contact the competent authority, in this case the Customs, immediately after entering Belgium. They will check on the basis of the identification document whether all conditions are fulfilled and they may also control the animal by themselves.

We follow this up with two sets of two larger survey-weighted multivariate logistic regression models to see how the regression coefficients change when we include and exclude health variables. Given the cross-sectional nature of this sample, it is impossible to make causal interpretations from any observed associations. We do know that pet ownership cannot change some biological variables, such as gender, age, and race; but it is plausible that pet ownership may influence other variables, including health-related characteristics. Therefore, we model two different regressions: one set that includes variables that can never (or are unlikely to be) changed by pet ownership; and another that includes a set of variables that might be influenced by … Read more

Did you know that a pet can considerably reduce the amount of stress in your life? A pet is great companion. They give owners company, a sense of security and someone to share the routine of the day with. Pets can be especially valuable company for those in later life and living alone. A cross-cultural analysis of 60 countries found that 52 of them kept dogs, but were only considered companions, or pets, in 22 of them. For example, research has shown that people with pets tend to have more mental health issues and suffer from increased levels of depression than non-pet owners.

1. It’s illegal. It is against the law to try to raise any type of wild animal in captivity. That goes for baby crocodiles and monkeys from the illegal pet trade as well as baby robins and bunnies from your back yard. The human-animal bond is a mutually beneficial and dynamic relationship between people and animals that positively influences the health and well-being of both.
