I’ve always wondered if it’s an evolutionary hump that intelligence reaches and then overcomes; feeling the desire to keep pets, that is. I believe that in the future, we will no longer feel the desire to “keep” pets, aside from the few who truly wish to stay in our company, because the more we learn about animals, in general, the more we learn that they are better left in the wild.

Habituation is a process by which animals gradually get used to situations they would normally avoid. Many animals are easily habituated if they are not handled and managed properly during rehabilitation. Coupled with the unpredictable nature of wild animals, habituation is dangerous for humans and wild animals. Habituated animals cannot be returned to the wild, because they are likely to become nuisances or an outright danger to humans, which in turn jeopardizes the animals.

His idea, which is shared by a number of legal advocates, is that humans are unique. Only we can have rights because rights imply responsibility and an understanding of how society works and how the law works. All of human civilization is built on us not only understanding our own rights but also understanding the rights of others. Giving animals rights completely shatters this: Not only are they not human, but we have no idea that they can even comprehend this status and these rights that we’ve given them.

Before pets can be imported to New Zealand, they need to meet health requirements. You are right. There are scads of examples of long-term attachments between animals of different species. The problem is that virtually all these cases have occurred among captive or semi-captive animals in zoos, wildlife sanctuaries, or research labs. I recently scoured academic journals and consulted a host of animal behaviorists for examples of pet-keeping in other species in the wild. I found none. True, there are a few articles in primatology journals which describe instances in which wild chimpanzees “played” with small animals like hyraxes. But in each case, the relationship soon went south when the chimps killed their new pals and proceeded to toss their corpses around like rag dolls.

Before Hurricane Florence hit, local animal shelters began asking residents for assistance in providing shelter for the pets in their care. A viral photos shows the long line of people willing to help at animal rescue center, Saving Grace, where 124 dogs were successfully rescued. There are lots of definitions in the scholarly literature. I like the anthrozoologist James Serpell’s definition. He says a pet is an animal that we live with that has no obvious function.

3. Wild animals carry diseases. Did you know that many wild animals — like raccoons or skunks — can be carriers for rabies without showing any symptoms? And according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, tens of thousands of people get salmonella infections each year from wild reptiles or amphibians. Bringing a wild animal into your home exposes your whole family — you, your kids and your pets — to a slew of potentially fatal diseases.

As you explore the questions below you’ll discover which animals are suitable for each situation, this will narrow down your … Read more

They give owners company, a sense of security and someone to share the routine of the day with. Pets can be especially valuable company for those in later life and living alone. A cross-cultural analysis of 60 countries found that 52 of them kept dogs, but were only considered companions, or pets, in 22 of them. For example, research has shown that people with pets tend to have more mental health issues and suffer from increased levels of depression than non-pet owners.

1. It’s illegal. It is against the law to try to raise any type of wild animal in captivity. That goes for baby crocodiles and monkeys from the illegal pet trade as well as baby robins and bunnies from your back yard. The human-animal bond is a mutually beneficial and dynamic relationship between people and animals that positively influences the health and well-being of both.
